Charges Dropped Against Officer Who Fatally Shot 7 Year Old Aiyana Stanley-Jones

This story truly brings tears to my eyes. In 2010, Aiyana Stanley-Jones was just a 7 year old girl who was sleeping in her family’s home when Detroit police came busting into the door. The First 48 reality show was filming when all of this took place. One of the officers began firing shots. One of those shots killed Aiyana in her sleep. The shooter responsible for her death was policeman Joseph Weekley. He claims he was temporarily blinded by a flash grenade when he began shooting. He then says he saw Aiyana’s grandmother touch his gun which caused him to release fire. If you cannot see, how can you see who touched your gun? His charges of manslaughter, involuntary manslaughter and felony charges he faced were all dropped. Only the charge of careless discharge of a firearm causing death will still stand and is a minor misdemeanor.

The prosecution team argued that the officers have training on how to act in a raid. The officer’s finger was on the trigger waiting to pull it at any moment. Apparently his finger was not supposed to be on the trigger because they were doing a search, and as a result of that Aiyana is no longer with her family. Ronald Lawrence, the chairman of the  Justice for Aiyana Committee, issued a statement after the court made their decision. “Surely, the death of a baby by a well-trained police force must be deemed unacceptable in a civilized society”. Is our society actually civilized? Would a non policeman receive the same charges to be dropped if they accidentally shot and killed someone? The defense argued they cannot deny he did not pull the trigger, but there is no proof that he intended to cause harm. However, if he was not following protocol he should be held responsible.  We are sending a message across the country that police officers do not have to pay for any wrong doing.

How many of our children will be murdered by police officers and never see justice?  What are officials doing for the family? They lost their child, receive no justice, how is this fair?

Rapper J. Cole dedicated his video to Crooked Smile to Aiyana. If you haven’t seen it check it out.
