Congressional Staffers Walk Out Of Jobs In Support Of Eric Garner & Mike Brown

Congressional Staffers Walk Out in Protest

150 congressional staffers walked out of their jobs on Capitol Hill as a silent protest in honor of Mike Brown and Eric Garner. They stood outside of the U.S. House of Representatives with their arms up in the air. Mike Brown allegedly had his hands in the air when the police officer Darren Wilson fatally shot him. Their movement was to show that no justice is being served for cases such as Mike Brown, Trayvon Martin and Eric Garner.

The protest included Senate Black Legislative Staff Caucus, Congressional Black Associates, the Brooke-Revels Society, the Congressional African Staff Association, and the African American Women on the Hill Network.

One protester told The Daily Beast :

“Black staffers on Capitol Hill wanted to do something in support of ongoing national and global protests against police aggression. Many of us felt we needed to stand with others who were taking on the issue of police abuse and do it here, where we work, even though not all of us have had that same experience, personally. Everyone I talked to has known someone who’s been directly impacted. As black staffers on Capitol Hill, we saw a stark disconnect. While we hold education credentials and broad access in the overall political system, often when we walk outside, we contend with the fact that we are seen as dangerous, merely because of the color of our skin.”

“[This was a] show of unity and solidarity… to stand shoulder to shoulder with other peaceful demonstrations.”

These type of protests are the best kind. Peaceful and powerful, tearing up your OWN community won’t solve a thing. I mean think about it, the SWAT teams that come out to the looting type of protests, they ALLOW you to tear it up because it doesn’t take away from them. You think people would’ve made it tearing up businesses in a predominantly white community? I hardly doubt that.

Let’s keep it up for the victims who no longer have a voice! #ICan’tBreathe #Don’tShoot
