I know these accusations will be a hard pill to swallow for some ladies. Norma Mitchell is the ex wife of actor and R&B singer Tyrese. She recently did an interview with Madame Noire where she spoke about being abused by Tyrese during and after their relationship.
Now the two are going through a legal battle in regards to their daughter the two share. Norma wants to go to Israel and take their daughter to visit her mother and grandmother. Tyrese has asked a judge to intervene to not allow his daughter to go because he fears that Norma will never return. Israeli law will not force Norma to move back if she chooses not to, nor will they help Tyrese get his daughter back. The judge granted Norma 2 weeks to vacay. Norma says it is just a vacation.
In the interview she does disclose why she waited all this time to talk about the alleged violence she endured.
Norma revealed that Tyrese abused her for 7 years and she is not trying to ruin his reputation but she feels she can help another woman who may feel she can’t speak up.
“Seven years [of silence] is long enough. It’s not in my nature to try to harm someone else. I’ve always tried my best to keep it moving and keep to myself, but I’ve also become very aware that there are other women out there who are going through similar situations.”
She started a women’s empowerment campaign called “Because I’m A Woman”.
“There are a lot of women who are going through what I’m going through and they simply don’t have the resources to help them move forward and overcome the things that they’re going through.”
“I will do my best to make it known that emotional violence, verbal abuse and mental abuse is something serious and it happens to many women. A lot of men are using the legal system to control women and to put them in a state of fear. A few of the things that have happened to me that I know have happened to other women is being followed and surveyed. That’s not something fun. It makes you anxious. You know, just provoking you and harassing you with emails. That overwhelms women and it puts you in a fear state.”
She plans to equip women with the knowledge of the court system. She has learned so much she represented herself in court against Tyrese’s lawyer.
She then went on to confirm that the rumors about their relationship being abusive was true.
“Yes, there was [physical and emotional abuse in my marriage]. Definitely. If you have this conversation with many women, they can tell you the exact same thing. Sometimes it’s so covert that you don’t know it’s happening until it’s happening.”
She says she feels guilty when situations like the Ray Rice incident happen, because she wasn’t speaking up.
“I felt so irresponsible at that moment because I wasn’t taking responsibility as a woman and using my voice to perhaps alleviate those blows. It starts with words and then it becomes physical, but the words are what linger. The physical abuse heals quickly, but the emotional keeps coming back because you’re so unsure of yourself.”
One thing that worried her when she was going through the court battle with Tyrese is that he was a man with money. We saw that money was on Ludacris’ side in his custody battle for his daughter.
“A lot of men with money and more power, especially with passive women, are using the legal system to abuse these women. Then they can point the finger and say, ‘Look at her, she’s crazy,’ because one day you just explode and can’t take it anymore.”
Norma says she tells her daughter not to pay attention to the the media reports about what’s going on. She says she had to give her the reality that media will report stories and people will read them, but their reality makes them stronger.
Tyrese may or may not respond to these accusations because he is currently promoting his final album Black Rose. As parents, they need to put their personal beef to the side for the sake of their daughter.
