Over the weekend, Beyonce debuted a visual album on HBO called Lemonade. The film included a lot of what we call today as ‘Black Girl Magic’. It showed a lot of empowerment, but also included scenes that pulled at your heart strings. For example, she included the mothers of Eric Garner, Trayvon Martin & Mike Brown holding their sons pictures. According to Piers Morgan, she is using it all as a gimmick to make her way up the charts.
The journalist revealed to ‘The Daily Mail’ why he is not here for a cup of Bey’s Lemonade.
The new Beyoncé wants to be seen as a black woman political activist first and foremost, entertainer and musician second. I still think she’s a wonderful singer and performer, and some of the music on Lemonade is fantastic. But I have to be honest, I preferred the old Beyoncé. The less inflammatory, agitating one.
The one who didn’t use grieving mothers to shift records and further fill her already massively enriched purse. The one who didn’t play the race card so deliberately and to my mind, unnecessarily. The one who wanted to be judged on her stupendous talent not her skin color, and wanted us all to do the same.
Some celebrities and some of the BeyHive responded to his criticism which he responded to on Twitter.
Note to #BeyHive: I won't be changing my opinion however loud you scream or however many death threats you spit at me. #Beyonce

Oh pipe down, Mr Martin.
I've heard you sing. https://t.co/kI4nsYN4F3— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) April 25, 2016
Piers, this is what happens when you are CLUELESS about the Black American experience. Our music is OURS. https://t.co/2MIEmePJOu

Let me be real clear, Piers: @Beyonce & those of us who fight police brutality don't give a damn what you think. https://t.co/2MIEmePJOu

@piersmorgan Nina Simone: “An artist's duty, as far as I'm concerned, is to reflect the times.” Beyonce’s self expression part of her growth

Perhaps, but she expressed the complete opposite view to me only 5yrs ago. Very firmly. https://t.co/QYsmAxIC23
— Piers Morgan (@piersmorgan) April 25, 2016
Yes, but I still prefer Beyoncé's former position that it was best to be judged on talent not skin colour. https://t.co/KtqXncxfR4

@piersmorgan You buy into white supremacy. You believe in the angry black woman. You believe the inferiority of blackness WS tells you.

Do you agree with his statements? I know some people were saying this was a big marketing ploy to feed off of the emotions of women, in regards to the emotional ups and downs we have when dealing with men. However, is this is the first I am hearing of someone feeling Bey is exploiting black people for financial gain.
My opinion is this, I believe with the 60’s happening all over again, more black people are becoming more socially aware. That interview 5 years ago that Piers is talking about, shows Beyonce was at a different place in life. This was before the death of Sandra Bland and the shootings of Trayvon Martin, Tamir Rice and Mike Brown. Things have altered so fast in this world and people adapt to these changes and act accordingly. This isn’t the first time Beyonce has had dealings with some of the slain victims mothers, so why now is this a problem? I think the black community and maybe even some of the white community would question if people like Beyonce, who has a huuuuuge platform, did not use it to address the problems going on in America.
What do you think?
Are some of the white media outlets feeling some kind of way because some black entertainers are leaning towards being more revolutionary instead of just being the entertainment? Or do you think Piers has a point? Is Beyonce using the “black card” to get richer?
