This saga continues….
A 50 year old Black South Carolina man named Walter L. Scott, was pulled over by 33 year old Officer Michael Slager on Saturday. According to a report obtained by the Observer, Scott fled the car, and the officer ran behind him stopping in a field behind a muffler shop.
A bystander took video of what happened next, and turned it over to an attorney who gave it to the New York Times. The video shows Scott being tasered. As he was running you can see the wires hanging from him. The officer then pulls out his gun and fires 8 shots at Scott, who was about 20 feet away from Slager.
The footage shows Slager walk towards Scott and he reported the shooting saying, “Shots fired and the subject is down. He took my Taser.” He then just drops the stun gun by Scott’s body.
Mayor Keith Summney announced the charges against Slager yesterday. Mayor Summney stated “When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” “When you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or a citizen on the street, you have to live with that decision.”
Scott’s brother Anthony says that his brother owed a lot of child support so that’s why he probably ran. He feared all the time he would go to jail.
The coroner report says 5 out of the 8 bullets landed in Scott’s body, including the fatal shot that pierced his heart. Neither of the 2 officers at the scene tried to resuscitate the man.
When cases like Eric Garner, Mike Brown and Tony Robinson happen, and these cops get off, it allows officers all over the US think that they can get away with murder. How many times has this happened in JUST 2015 and it is only April? He shot that man and casually planted evidence like it was nothing. “Oh let me call this in and blame the victim, he is dead anyway, I’ll get off ” is probably what he was thinking.
I am beyond glad that this officer is getting locked up, but what about the others? The one’s whose victim’s haven’t died yet? How many officers have gotten away with lying on the victim in the media to clear their names? This is far from over, and another Black life is taken when it didn’t have to be.
