Zendaya has definitely come a long way from being just a Disney kid. She has landed a major role as Mary Jane Watson in the upcoming film Spider-Man: Homecoming.
The 19 year old actress will star in the film with British actor Tom Holland. Sony and Marvel have both confirmed that Zendaya will be taking on the role. The news started trending on Twitter sparking some controversy about her playing a role made for a white girl.
Check out what they said.
I don't think changing the ethnicity, gender, or personality of an iconic character is a good idea. Create new characters.

Nope. Still looks fuck all like MJ. Sorry, but MJ is a white red head. Why can't we just keep characters the same?

There were a lot of people that stood behind Zendaya playing Mary Jane, including the creator of Spider-Man, Stan Lee.
If she is as good an actress as I hear she is, I think it’ll be absolutely wonderful. … The color of their skin doesn’t matter, their religion doesn’t matter. All that matters is that this the right person for the role.
Other people on Twitter also supported her.
Seeing ppl mad about Zendaya being cast as MJ got me like pic.twitter.com/NGA9ggO8QY

I love Zendaya! She is definitely a great role model for any young girl growing up. I think it’s great she was able to play this role, but what would have been better is having Spider-Man being a black teen like the new comic books. America aint ready though.
