The director of the upcoming Sky Arts series, Urban Myths, is standing by his decision to cast white actor Joseph Fiennes, to play the role of the late Mike Jackson.
The series is satire comedy based on lives of Muhammad Ali, Bob Dylan, Samuel Beckett, and the story of an alleged road trip Michael Jackson took with Elizabeth Taylor and Marlon Brando.
Director Ben Palmer says that his decision was based on Fiennes performance, not his physical appearance.
“We were casting Michael Jackson in 2001 and that obviously is a challenge in terms of the physical resemblance.
“We were really looking for the performance that could unlock the spirit, and we really think Joe Fiennes has done that. He’s given a really sweet, nuanced, characterful performance.”
He says that although he is being accused of “white washing” he wants people to look at the film before making assumptions.
“It’s a really lovely, sweet film. I’m really looking forward to seeing how people react once they’ve actually seen it,”
I assumed most directors try to at least get people to somewhat look the part, but I think this version of Michael Jackson goes in the boat with actor Flex Alexander’s portrayal.
