Numerous phone calls were made to 911 for police to come to the La Jolla Crossroads Apartments. ABC News was able to get a statement from witness Maniza Sheikhani, “I heard what sounded like fireworks, I wasn’t sure what it was. And then I smelled smoke and I turned around and I heard people screaming and running … I just ran. And I heard other people screaming, ‘There’s a shooter, there’s an active shooter.'”
The police helicopter arrived first at the scene reporting seeing multiple victims on the ground and the suspect apparently reloading his firearm in the pool area, the police chief said.
8 adult victims in total were shot. 1 woman died later at the hospital. According to police flour black women, two black men and a Latino man were struck by the gunfire, but police says there is no evidence of a hate crime.
The alleged gunman is identified as Peter Selis 49, a white car mechanic who struggled with massive debt and a failing marriage in the last two years. He lived in the apartments but it has not been confirmed if he had any connection to the party or the victims. He was shot and killed by the police.
Another witness says he was “was sitting there with a beer in one hand and a gun in the other.”
“This is truly a horrific act of violence,” San Diego Mayor Kevin Faulconer said at a news conference. “Our entire city, all of our thoughts and prayers, all San Diegans’ thoughts and prayers, are with the victims and their families tonight.”
