Houston PD responded to a 911 call where a 15 year old boy says that his brother has been dead in their apartment for over a year.
According to the teen, his 9 year old brother died a year ago and his body was in the room next to his. He has been taking care of his two other siblings that are 10 and 7. The conditions of the apartment were not livable. There was no power in the unit, and the smell was gut wrenching. A neighbor Dianne Davis, had been complaining to the manager of the complex about the smell for months, and nothing was ever done. “How come they couldn’t detect this?” Davis told the newspaper. “How could that not have been found?”
Harris County Deputy Thomas Gilliland told the Houston Chronicle that neighbors had been giving the kids food and charging their cell phone. Did no one suspect something was wrong? No one called for authorities to check on these kids? Apparently, the manager does check ups on units, with last week being reported as the most recent. It just doesn’t make sense.
Child Protective Services are seeking emergency custody of the children. Melissa Lanford, a spokesperson for Texas CPS sent a statement to the Post saying, “Child Protective Services does have history with the family, but there was no active CPS investigation at the time the children were discovered alone in their apartment,”.
The mother of the children, and her boyfriend were located and taken in for questioning. They later were released and not charged.
