Tesla CEO Elon Musk, plans to start testing out microchips being implanted in human brains in 2022.
With his company Neuralink, he is developing a chip that would be implanted in people’s brains to simultaneously record and stimulate brain activity. He claims the purpose of the chip implant is to treat serious spinal-cord injuries and neurological disorders.
In an interview, Musk revealed his plans saying, “”Neuralink’s working well in monkeys, and we’re actually doing just a lot of testing and just confirming that it’s very safe and reliable, and the Neuralink device can be removed safely.”
His first set of tests will be on patients that have severe nerve and spine damage to see how their body reacts. He released a video of a monkey who has the chimp implanted, showing what could be expected once the chips are planted in humans.
In the video, the monkey named Pager uses a joystick, and the Neuralink chip records his brain activity and sends it back to a computer for analysis of what his brain does when he moves his hand. The joystick is then unplugged from the machine, but the monkey continues to control the game, with brain signals being relayed by the Neuralink chips.
In an April 2021 tweet, Musk says with his chip someone with paralysis will be able to use a smart phone faster than one using their hands.
First @Neuralink product will enable someone with paralysis to use a smartphone with their mind faster than someone using thumbs
