Security footage has been released showing a 9 year old Ohio student, being forced by the school’s lunch aide to eat food that had been thrown in the trash.
The student told her parents that she did not like the food that was provided and requested a different option. She was told no by adults in the lunchroom and was told to finish what was on her tray. She finished her food in the cafeteria inside Palm Elementary School, and threw the remains in the trash, while telling the principal she did not like the waffles. Before she could walk away, the student says one of the lunch aide’s went into the trash and took out the waffles and forced her to eat them.
Here is the footage from the incident that took place on November 21, 2021 that was released to the public.
The child’s mother LaTosha Williams, was understandably furious and made a complaint with the principal but nothing was done. She filed a law suit against the school that seeks admission of wrongdoing, a collaborative effort to prevent such incidents in the future and an undetermined amount of money. She says she lost her job because she had to stay home after the incident to nurse her daughter that had gotten sick after eating the food.
Superintendent and CEO Dr. Jeff Graham reported his intention to discharge both the principal and paraprofessional who were the subjects of the investigation. Apparently the video footage was enough to prove the situation was mishandled. “Any infringement upon the dignity and respect of our students will not be tolerated. Our students deserve staff members who are able to make good decisions in all situations — and any staff member who is unable to deliver on that promise is unwelcome in our schools,” Graham said in a statement. Since then both the principal and lunch aide have been fired.
Williams said in a statement in December, “It literally flipped my whole family upside down,” she said in December. “She has changed at home. She doesn’t act the same. She doesn’t even want to go to school.”
The lawyer for the child’s family says, “unfortunately, in our world and society today, had that video not been there, it might have just been a child’s word against a teacher, an administrator, which is a tough spot to be in.”
